ITS AN ARTIFICIAL LIFE 7/18/98
There will come a day, and I personally look forward to it, where we can become one with our computers. Its not just about avatars or virtual beings but to truly become cyborgs. This inevitability does not have to be frightening - it is happening by degrees very gradually becoming accepted into our reality. With that here are some related links so you can get busy doing your part... evolving the future. WearComp: wearable computing in theory and practice Boids: artificial life study Macintosh Artificial Life Software:artificial life you can play with TEKmart: new materials for new medias Ultimate Future: info on new and used VR gear RobotWars: it is exactly what it sounds like Immerscence: Artist Char Davies' site about her immersive VR experiences. |

THEY KNOW WHERE YOU ARE WHERE YOU'VE BEEN AND WHERE YOU'RE GOING TO BE... and its all right... 7/6/98
I downloaded a program called Alexa last week (unfortunately its just in alpha for the Mac) and I've been surfing with it and its been surfing along with me. It catalogs where you have been, how many others have visited, who links to the site, and gives ratings on websites based on comments by other websurfers and also gives you information about who owns a site and how to locate them (ack). I have always felt that the net was analagous to the earth in many ways, and I think Alexa is now the equivalent to the satellites circling us up above taking snapshots of us where we live and commute :-) If you are interested in seeeing some of those photograps go to the TerraServer this scary Microsoft backed site, which claims to be the largest database of space pictures, will even allow you to purchace those photographs and The Living Earth operates on similar lines. Other interesting Earth viewers include the X-Earth site where you can generate your own custom view of our planet, The Sensorium which takes earth data such as earthquakes and lets you see it two-week animated segments of worldwide seismic activity and another one of my favorite sites is a virtual tour of the world via QTVR. |
